"The Desert Oasis Clinic Is Unique" By Sandy Zimmerman Dr. John Thompson, DO, Medical Director of the Desert Oasis Clinic, combines the best of conventional, traditional medicine with alternative and natural therapies. “We believe good medicine is using both approaches; there is no one way of delivering medicine that works for everybody. Combining the best of all of these traditions allows the doctor to deal with a patient as a whole. Pills do not always work, sometimes you need other things. One patient suffering from acute phenomena wanted to use herbs, but we encouraged him to take care of the phenomena first. We want to get this infection under control that is where functional medicine comes in. The solution is not just prescribing medicine or not just taking herbs, but to educate the patient. When an illness requires good medical judgment like taking antibiotics, both conventional and alternative medicine have their place. Most people do well with a combined approach. The more physicians are able to do for their patients, the better they can help them. After the patients are well, I deal with why they have the tendency to have infections.”

(Continued) I feel Dr.
Thompson cares about his
patients and thinks of them as
a whole person. He explained,
“As a physician, I try to get a
grip on my patient’s lifestyles,
what they are eating and
drinking. We have to build
your body with high grade
nutrients daily. When people
eat fast food, they sustain life
but do not maintain
health.”

Preventative Medicine
Maybe you are doing
something wrong or eating
something wrong and the
doctor has to act like a
detective. Dr. Thompson
explained, “I like to refer to
functional medicine, as
assessment and early
intervention to prevent a
medical problem from
occurring and come up with
solutions to assist the body
to help heal that problem;
We feel functional medicine
is the ultimate in
preventative medicine. First
I start with teaching the
patient to adapt to a better
life style, learn more about
their health, and use their
body without having it
breaking down. Assessment
and early intervention is
important. We do not JUST
use blood tests because
many patients can have
normal blood tests and not
show certain diseases. We
listen to people, 85% of the
time if we just listen, the
patient will tell us what the
diagnosis is, listening is very
important, part of our
success.”
This is a unique clinic. Dr. Thompson
advises his patients, “Get in touch with
your body; Get to know your body this
year. When you have symptoms over
time, have them checked, sometimes
there are windows of opportunity to
correct these problems if we act
accordingly early. Drink more purified
water daily, get enough sleep, and eat
real food. A lot of what we eat is artifacts.
You have to know how to shop in a
grocery. Shop in the periphery, not in the
center of the store. Anything that
resembles real food is in the periphery. If
we look at our society, 66% of adults are
overweight and one third of our young
people. It increases trouble. I encourage
lifestyle changes with some form of
exercise, better foods, something we can
do every day to improve our health.
Come in for a consultation to discuss your
problems, what is happening in your life.
My consultations are one hour, we can
only get to know each other if we spend
time.
Dr. Thompson has several rooms, each
for treating different illnesses. His IV
room is large and comfortable equipped
to provide various types of IV Nutritional
Therapy for the immune system, pain
management, low energy, and other
medical problems. As Dr. Thompson
describes Detox Therapies, “It is like
taking out the trash, we basically help
people to cleanse the body. The body is
designed to last many, many years if we
take care of it, and one of the best ways is
to give a cleansing. The more toxins a
person has they need more oxygen to
burn up that trash." (Continued)

medical technology, Dr. Thompson ‘s Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber is usually only available at just a few hospitals. When treating patients with Hyperbaric Oxygen, the patient is lying down, relaxing, watching videos on the television set, while breathing compressed 100% oxygen. You can see outside and sit up a little bit in this state- of- the- art chamber. The technician is there during the entire treatment, speaking to the patient on the telephone. Originally used for divers coming up from great distances, there are uses for many other conditions, some neurological, some sports related and for other systems in the body.
